Can I handle the truth?

Lee asked herself for the nth time. She knew what was coming, she knew she deserved every bit of truth – hard, raw, and straight right at her. Running was not an option; hiding was out of the question. She knew, this week would test her courage and strength. She knew, it was the inevitable, so the only thing she can do was decide: Fight or Flee?

Rick nudged her arm and Lee realized she must have drifted off again. These days her head flew wherever, sometimes in an attempt to take her mind off pressing matters. They would not understand, Lee thought to herself. How could they when all they think about is what they see, and not what is true at least for her.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” asked Rick quietly.

Lee shook her head and said, “Nothing. Just thinking about things.” Her voice trailed off as though once more drifting into outer space.

Rick sighed and wrapped his arms around Lee, squeezing her.

Lee leaned back and stared blankly at the slowly descending sun, and remained still.

Though Lee remained silent, Rick could see how troubled she was, but she refused to talk. He could not push her to talk as well, because he knew she would talk when she was ready. Still, he wished there was something he could do.

“I was thinking about the truth,” Lee finally said. “I was thinking how many things would eventually come out, and how some people would start hammering me with accusations and words that will definitely hurt. And… I’m scared.”

Rick tightened his arms around her and said, “Facing the truth is hard. It definitely requires courage; courage that most people cannot handle.

“I know that you are hurting now,” Rick continued, “but I want you to know that you are a wonderful person, and a tough one at that. And while I did not approve of some of the things that you did, but I know that you did those with the consequences in mind. So you are expecting these confrontations as well.”

Lee sighed and said, “Yeah. I know. I have my reasons too.” But perhaps not you nor anybody else would understand. I do have my reasons, and though foolish, sometimes I have to stick to my decisions and be big enough to face the consequence, Lee thought.

“Well, would you rather that you remained innocent of the truth? Or know how they truly feel?” asked Rick.

“I honestly prefer to know the truth rather than create false truths in my brain,” said Lee. “But my mother said that sometimes innocence is bliss, because it relieves people from grief. So I guess the truth will always set you free, but there are always instances where keeping people in the dark is best.”

“Yeah, I have to agree.” said Rick. “You know,” Rick continued, “whatever it is that is going to happen, the truth will hurt you, but you just have to face these things. The more you run from the truth, the more you are troubled. So be strong. I know you are.”

Rick pulled Lee closer and breathed into her hair smelling the sweet scent of her shampoo. Lee shivered and the gesture and snuggled closer.

The truth was on a fast train that was headed right for her. All she knew now was brace herself and be ready for the truth to hit.

Because… the Fates said so

“I am not in the mood, go away!” cried Lee, rubbing the back of her neck woefully. “I do not want to answer anything you want to ask me, Rick, please, please, please, go away!”

“Oh come on Oscar the Grouch, Groucho Marx, Grumpy,” said Rick, slowly massaging Lee’s back as he continued to badger her with questions about the Fates, Oracles, and how things are supposed to be.

“Rick, I am so tired right now that I cannot even think. You rubbing me that way doesn’t help because all I can think about now is going to sleep,” answered Lee, her eyes half closed with her head swaying slightly backwards as Rick continued to massage her nape. “Besides, what would I know? What do you think I am? A walking encyclopedia?”

“Not really,” Rick replied, “more like somebody who is into these types of things.” He took the liniment Lee had on her computer table and poured some on his hands before continuing his massage. “I just wanted to know if you think things happen for a reason.”

Lee moaned softly, clearly enjoying the impromptu massage, and said, “you keep doing what you do, and I will tell you that if I fall asleep right now it is because of what you are doing… See? Reasons. Always reasons…” Lee rambled on drowsily.

Rick stopped and turned Lee’s chair around facing him and said, “Hey! Answer me directly and I promise I will let you do whatever you want to do afterwards. I just need to know, okay?”

Lee straightened up, shook her head and faced Rick. “Fine,” she said, breathing deeply, “I believe that things happen for a reason. Because life is made up of cause and effect. However, in every situation we are given choices which as humans, we have free will to decide which way we go. Still, there will a greater scheme of things that in one way or another is where we are supposed to be.”

Lee shook her head and continued, “I don’t know about you, but I think things happen just because they should happen.” Raising her head, she then said, “I know for one that if I do not get any sleep, I will be cranky, and if I am cranky, nobody gets lucky. So if nobody gets lucky, perhaps it will be for the best.

“However, since you are so kind and you will let me get my due rest, you will most likely benefit from a nice breakfast tomorrow morning and your day will be nice because I am turning in early.”

After seeing Lee yawn like a sleepy cat, he had nothing more to say but shrug and smile, he said, “Okay, babe, whether I get lucky or not tonight, I know it will be for the best. I get it. Obviously, you are very sleepy because I don’t think I understood much of your rambling tonight.”

Kissing Lee lightly on the nose, Rick guided her to the bed, brought her a change of clothes, and tucked her in after she slipped into her nightgown. “Good night, baby, sweet dreams,” said Rick, but there was no reply. Lee was already fast asleep, so Rick just kissed her forehead and turned off the lights before going back to his computer.

Looking ahead at 2010 – I mean, 11!

“I can’t read clearly! Read it! Read it! Read it!”

“Where are your glasses?”

“How should I know? I called them, they didn’t answer. Read it!”

“Which one?”

“That one! Recent DailyPost topic of the day.”

“This one?”

“I think so… does it say anything about having 60 minutes to live?”

“Well? What does it say?!”

“Oh. Topic for today is, ‘What are you looking forward to this year?'”

“I’m composing an entry in my mind.”

“Wow. Quick thinking.”

“So…? What do you look forward to this year?”

“…quick harping. I’m composing my entry…”

“Quit thinking and share.”

“Oh nothing much. Just more love, more smiles, my first tattoo, loads of cash, loads of bills, more opportunities, more chocolates… and…”

“… and??”

“More time in bed.” *bats eyelashes*
